The Panthers just missed out on making their only two Super Bowl appearances in the same stadium, considering they lost to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII at NRG Stadium, which was then called Reliant Stadium.

The Houston Texans are a long shot to become the first team to play a Super Bowl in their home stadium. They won the AFC South with a 9-7 record this season, but it was the NFL’s worst division and Houston was shutout in their only playoff game.

It will be the 14th consecutive year in which the Super Bowl is held in February. The Super Bowl had been played on Feb. 5 twice before. The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Seattle Seahawks in 2006, and the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots in 2012 on that date.
