The 2016 Super Bowl Ad Meter results are in, and Hyundai “First Date” featuring Kevin Hart is the big winner. Most brands played it safe this year, but a few big game ads were still memorable thanks to celebrity appearances (Steve Harvey, Christopher Walken) and cute animals (wiener dogs, marmot). Several companies decided to stand out by being weird, such as Mountain Dew Kickstart’s sort-of-terrifying #puppymonkeybaby and Willem Dafoe as Marilyn Monroe (yes, in that dress) for Snickers.
A 30-second spot during Super Bowl 50 cost $5 million this year. Super Bowl ads were bigger and better with each passing year. People spent nearly 4 million hours watching game-day ads and teaser videos on YouTube this year. That’s nearly double the 2.2 million hours spent last year last year. YouTube also says that official Super Bowl ads and teaser videos have racked up more than 140 million views, more than half of which have happened on mobile devices. The U.S television broadcast states that Super Bowl XLIX in 2015 was seen by at least 114.4 million viewers in the United States rating the highest rated television broadcast in U.S. history. Given this, companies are willing to spend millions for a 30-second ad spot within the game.
